- Charleston Advisor and database reviews - by James Simon. 20 min.
Background:
Since January 2008, CRL member institutions have had free access to the Charleston Advisor
(http://www.charlestonco.com/),
a journal that publishes critical reviews of online resources for libraries. CRL and TCA work
together to expand and enhance The Charleston Advisor as a source of trustworthy and authoritative
evaluations of electronic scholarly resources and services. By working together CRL and TCA
expect to make available to the collection development community more analytical information
about electronic resources and in-depth analysis of the archiving provisions that stand behind
those resources.
TCA is interested to hear from the CRL community regarding the particular kinds of database
products to review within its journal, plus offers the opportunity for individuals or groups
to assess particular databases. These can include commercial as well as non-commercial sources.
Is SAMP/CONSALD interested in contributing feedback to TCA on particular products?
This may be an opportunity for our South Asian cohorts to contribute as well.
- South Asian Language Periodicals Online - Sam Wright. 20 min.
Background: This item will discuss the possibility of creating an online database for
South Asian language periodicals. While South Asian language periodicals are usually of
low cost, many titles are often dispersed throughout a number of institutions or are of low
usage but high value. An online database would allow for access to the complete run of
a periodical and would allow for enhanced browsing/searching within a periodical.
[See: An Overview of OCR Research in Indian Scripts (http://bit.kuas.edu.tw/~ijcses/v2/n2/v2-2-9.pdf)]
** This agenda item aims to form a working group that would initiate a pilot project for creating this resource.
** Additional materials will be distributed at the meeting.
Note that OCR of South Asian scripts is not fully available yet.
- Ending of the meeting. 5 min.
